NEWPORT — The Newport Pop Warner program will host the mid-South regional playoffs Saturday at Croatan High School.

The mid-South region consists of Pop Warner teams from North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama.

“We hosted it six years ago at Croatan High School and we’ve been requesting bids to host ever since,” said Eastern North Carolina Pop Warner President Ike Rettenmair. “We kept pressing the issue, and after a few years, you keep trying and you come through.”

The first game will kick off the regional playoffs at 10 a.m. and involve the Smithfield, Va., Packers versus the Central, Va., Broncos.

Other games will follow involving South Chesapeake versus the Central, Va., Steelers at noon, Havelock versus the Wilders Grove (Raleigh) Wolfpack at 2 p.m. and New Bern Warriors versus Cary at 4 p.m.

The cost is $3 for students and $6 for adults.

Winners of those games will advance to the semifinals where the winners will advance to Charlotte and the mid-South championships.

“The winners at Charlotte then go to Disney World (Lake Buena Vista, Fla.) to play in the national championship,” said Rettenmair. “However, a lot of teams win at Charlotte and then elect not to go to Disney World due to monetary concerns. A lot of programs don’t have that kind of money.”

Teams from the Eastern North Carolina Pop Warner program have been successful in the mid-South championship with the Newport Midget (12-15) team winning at Charlotte in 2005 and the New Bern team winning the last two years.

Newport is the only Pop Warner program left in the county. Beaufort, Morehead City and Western Carteret County have joined the American Youth Football League.

The Newport program, established in 1985, has been highly successful. This year, there are 140 boys playing tackle football, 20 playing flag football and 50 girls participating as cheerleaders.

The mission of Pop Warner is to enable children to benefit from participation in team sports and activities in a safe and structured environment. Through this active participation, Pop Warner programs teach fundamental values, skills and knowledge that children will use throughout their lives.

Pop Warner is a nonprofit organization that provides youth football and cheer and dance programs for participants in 41 states and several countries around the world.

Consisting of about 400,000 young people ranging from ages 5-16, Pop Warner is the largest youth football, cheer and dance program in the United States.

Pop Warner is the only youth football program (local, regional and national) that sets and enforces a strict age and weight matrix that reduces the risk and reality of injuries. Pop Warner is safer than soccer with 12 percent fewer injuries per capita among 5-15 year olds than organized soccer in the same age range. (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, NEISS).

Newport Pop Warner offers football and cheer for children ages 4-13, with flag football involving ages 4-7 and tackle football involving ages 5-13.

The Eastern North Carolina Pop Warner program involves teams from Newport, Havelock, Swansboro, Jacksonville, New Bern, Pamlico, West Craven and Goldsboro. Combining all age groups, there are 47 teams in the eastern region.

On the following Saturday, Nov. 14, three Newport Pop Warner teams will take part in the first Charles Anderson Invitational Bowl at Swansboro.

“Anderson has been involved with Pop Warner since 1975,” said Rettenmair. “He started Havelock Pop Warner in 1976 and built our conference, which he is still commissioner of today.”

The Newport Mitey Mite team will take on the Churchland, Va., Tigers at 4:30 p.m. at Swansboro Middle School, followed by the Newport Jr. Pee Wee team versus the Coastal Colts at 6:30 p.m. The Newport Pee Wee team will take on the Smithfield, Va., Packers at noon at Swansboro High School.
